    The FOOLS - 1992 - 93

The Fools grew naturally out of The Buffoons, reflecting my continued interest in folklore and newly, the history of the Commedia dell’arte. While those subjects served as inspiration for the work, the situations and characters are all my own creations. The only direct reference to actual historical tradition is Fools Too Near the Hellmouth. The term “Hellmouth,” refers to a subject in European painting in the Middle Ages and The Renaissance or a medieval theatrical device or stage mechanism meant to depict a vividly horrific entrance to Hell.

The gallery exhibition of this work was accompanied by a one-time performance of a series of tableaux vivants with nude actors made-up to resemble the figures in the paintings.
